On May 11, 2021, the affluent suburb of Glyka Nera, Greece, was rocked by a tragedy that initially appeared to be a brutal home invasion.
Caroline Crouch, a vibrant 20-year-old mother with British and Filipina roots, was found de@d beside her infant daughter, Lydia, following a staged robbery.
Her husband, Babis Anagnostopoulos (29), a respected helicopter pilot, tearfully reported that masked intruders had caused his wife’s loss of life and stolen their savings.
The Fabricated Scene
When police arrived, the scene was meticulously arranged: Babis was found tied up, gagged, and blindfolded. He claimed he used his nose to dial the neighbor for help.
He tearfully recounted how armed men had broken in, demanded money, and caused Caroline’s de@th when she resisted. He also claimed the intruders fatally assailed their beloved Husky puppy, Roxy, hanging the dog on the staircase to terrify them into compliance.
The initial global outpouring of sympathy for the grieving widower was massive, but investigators quickly noticed inconsistencies in his highly detailed story.

The Evidence That Contradicted Grief
The ensuing investigation uncovered critical holes in Babis’s narrative. Despite his claims of a brutal robbery, there was no sign of forced entry into the house.
Furthermore, a critical piece of evidence lay hidden in the data of Caroline’s personal device: her smartwatch.
Data from the watch revealed that at around 4:00 AM, Caroline’s heart rate spiked dramatically for six minutes—a clear sign of severe stress or physical struggle—before abruptly stopping. This directly contradicted Babis’s initial timeline.
More damningly, the smartwatch recorded Babis’s own activities. While claiming he was tied up and incapacitated, the watch data showed Babis walking up and down the stairs in the house, actively moving around in the hours following the assault.
The subsequent search of Caroline’s belongings uncovered a devastating secret: her personal diary.
The diary entries revealed a troubled marriage plagued by Babis’s controlling behavior. Caroline had long wanted to leave her husband, moving to Central Athens with Lydia to attend a cooking school and pursue her dream of becoming a chef.
Babis had attempted to monitor her every move, installing a tracking application on her phone and accompanying her to therapy sessions to ensure he heard everything she said.
Caroline, fearful of his reaction, had grown increasingly anxious, often checking the door during sessions with her counselor, Elaine.
The Confrontation and the Confession
After 38 days of investigation, police orchestrated a final confrontation. Babis was intercepted by police while attending a memorial service for Caroline, under the false pretense of identifying a potential suspect.
Babis was subjected to eight hours of intense interrogation. Faced with the overwhelming evidence from the diary, the smartwatch data, and the forensic inconsistencies, Babis finally broke.
He admitted the robbery was a complete fabrication. He confessed that he had caused Caroline’s loss of life and that of their dog, Roxy, during a heated, final argument after she reiterated her desire to leave him.
He confessed to suffocating Caroline and then meticulously staging the scene—breaking into a money box, scattering valuables, and killing Roxy in a brutal attempt to frame Albanian thieves.
Babis was immediately arrested and charged with homicide, animal abuse, false reporting, and false testimony.
Justice, Custody, and Closure
The trial, which captivated international audiences, revealed Babis’s cruel efforts to destroy Caroline’s reputation in court, even as he was convicted.
In May 2022, Babis Anagnostopoulos was convicted of homicide and animal abuse. He was sentenced to life imprisonment plus an additional 11 years for the staging and animal abuse.
The court ordered him to pay €20,000 in damages. Crucially, the court removed Babis’s name from Caroline’s gravestone.
Custody of their daughter, Lydia, was officially granted to Caroline’s parents (including her Filipina mother, Susan). To completely sever the connection to the killer, Lydia was taken to the Philippines, where she remains under the care of her maternal grandparents.
The tragedy of Caroline Crouch, the British-Filipina who was betrayed and fatally assailed by her controlling husband, remains a powerful testament to the dangers of domestic violence hidden behind a façade of success.
