In the glamorous, competitive world of Indian showbiz, fame often comes with a dark underbelly. Actress and model Shanaya Katwe (24) achieved widespread notoriety not through her acting prowess, but as the alleged mastermind behind a brutal, premeditated crime: the unlawful taking of her own adopted brother’s life.
This tragic story exposes a familial betrayal rooted in years of resentment and an obsessive determination to remove the one obstacle to her happiness.
The Roots of Resentment
Shanaya Katwe was born in Karnataka, India. Following the early de@th of her father, she was raised by her mother. Shanaya fulfilled her mother’s dream by becoming a model, winning titles like Miss India Elegant North, and securing roles in the Kannada Film Industry.
However, behind the façade of success lay deep-seated familial resentment. Shanaya’s parents had adopted Rakesh Katwe (alias Kenneth, 32), the son of a relative, as they desired a son and a caregiver for their old age.
Shanaya secretly resented Kenneth, feeling he had stolen her mother’s attention since childhood. Despite her dislike, Kenneth remained quietly protective of his sister, especially after their father’s early passing.

The Obstacle: A Lover and a Drug Habit
The friction between the siblings reached a breaking point when Shanaya began a relationship with Niyas Ahmed (21). Niyas was wealthy but reportedly unemployed and involved in selling a controlled substance, a life Kenneth fiercely opposed for his sister.
Kenneth, protective of Shanaya, repeatedly warned her to end the relationship, correctly pointing out Niyas’s dangerous character. Shanaya, already viewing Kenneth as a block to her happiness, became enraged when he reported the relationship to their mother.
For Shanaya, the solution was not to choose between the men, but to eliminate the obstacle entirely. She decided to plot the unlawful taking of Kenneth’s life.
The Premeditated Plan
Shanaya confided in Niyas, telling him that if he truly loved her, he would remove Kenneth from her life. Niyas, aided by three friends—Tausif, Altaf, and Aman—agreed to carry out the act.
Shanaya meticulously chose the date of the crime, April 9, 2021. This date coincided with her promotional party for her new film, giving her a solid alibi with her mother far from their home.
The plan was chillingly simple: Shanaya handed Niyas the keys to her personal car (a Maruti Ritz) to use for the crime, ensuring the vehicle could be connected to the scene.
On the night of April 9, Niyas and the accomplices drove to Shanaya’s house in two cars (Niyas’s Hyundai and Shanaya’s Maruti). Niyas rang the doorbell.
Kenneth, unsuspecting, opened the door for Niyas, who was accompanied by the three men. The four assailants immediately overpowered Kenneth.
They quickly moved Kenneth’s body to the bathroom, where they used a large knife to dismember the remains. They cleaned the scene and then loaded the remains, placed in plastic bags, into the two vehicles.
The remains were transported to a remote forest. The assailants scattered the remains across the area, and some parts were later set ablaze in a devastating attempt to destroy the evidence.
The perpetrators then abandoned both cars near the forest, a critical mistake that provided police with immediate evidence.

The Confession and the Severe Charge
The investigation began when Shanaya and her mother returned home two days later, finding the house empty. They reported Kenneth missing.
Police quickly found the abandoned Maruti Ritz, linking the vehicle directly to the victim’s sister. Authorities discovered that the last person Kenneth spoke to on his phone was Shanaya.
Shanaya initially denied any knowledge, but when confronted with the evidence, she quickly confessed in less than an hour. She admitted that she was the mastermind who ordered the unlawful taking of her brother’s life to remove him from her romantic life.
Niyas and the three accomplices were also apprehended and confessed, confirming Shanaya orchestrated the entire operation.
All five suspects—Shanaya Katwe, Niyas Ahmed, Tausif, Altaf, and Aman—were charged with premeditated taking of life.
The tragic case highlighted the severe consequences of familial resentment and the dark side of celebrity.
Shanaya was arrested and later posted on social media from what seemed to be outside of confinement, raising concerns about the handling of the case.
However, all five suspects face the severe penalty of life imprisonment or the de@th penalty in India for the brutal and calculated taking of Kenneth’s life.
