The island of Koh Samui, Thailand, is celebrated globally for its tropical tranquility and rigorous safety measures, making it a trusted tourist destination. However, in May 2025, that image was violently shattered by a calculated crime that targeted one of its most dedicated healthcare workers.

Anchuli “Nook” Wangwang (36), a respected head nurse at a private hospital, was found de@d in her dormitory room—the victim of a brutal assault orchestrated by a desperate neighbor.

The Dedicated Nurse and the Desperate Neighbor

Anchuli Wangwang was the epitome of a dedicated professional: stable, quiet, and known for her soft, warm demeanor in the hospital. She had worked her way up to Head Nurse and prioritized her career and service to her community.

The perpetrator was Suwat Kongsong (30), a local man who lived next door in the dormitory complex with his girlfriend, a nursing assistant. Suwat was unemployed and struggling, deep in debt from an addiction to online gambling (owing up to 50,000 Baht / PHP 90,700).

Suwat, desperate and aware of Anchuli’s stable income, viewed her room as a target. He knew the layout of the dormitory and watched the professional nurse closely.

At 2:30 AM on May 21st, Suwat executed his plan. He scaled the small balcony separating the rooms, entered Anchuli’s unit through a slightly ajar rear door left open for ventilation, and intended to commit simple robbery.

The Fatal Struggle and the Staging

Suwat was immediately confronted by Anchuli, who woke up and screamed. In the ensuing struggle, Suwat panicked. When Anchuli managed to bite his hand deeply in a desperate act of defense, Suwat’s rage and fear boiled over.

He confessed that he lost control, strangled Anchuli until she lost consciousness, and continued the manual compression of her neck until she tragically lost her life.

The crime was instantly compounded by an elaborate attempt to conceal the truth. Suwat stripped the victim’s remaining clothes and used a t-shirt to wrap around her neck, attempting to disguise the distinct marks of the fatal assault.

He then deliberately scattered an empty condom box and its wrapper near the body, aiming to make the crime appear to be an assault on intimate areas or a domestic dispute, thereby diverting the investigation.

Before fleeing, Suwat stole Anchuli’s gold jewelry, her cell phone, and the keys to her silver Nissan sedan.

The Manhunt and the Bite Mark

The alarm was raised when Anchuli failed to show up for her shift. Investigators, finding no sign of forced entry, immediately suspected someone known to the victim.

The discovery of the stolen car—abandoned 2.5 miles away—confirmed that the assailant had fled the island’s main area.

An island-wide search was launched, locking down ferry terminals and ports. Suwat, who had fled to an abandoned house and later a local Sumtam restaurant kitchen, became the focus of the manhunt after police linked his sudden disappearance and the testimony of his girlfriend.

Suwat was apprehended in the restaurant kitchen in the early hours of May 22nd. The most powerful piece of physical evidence was discovered immediately: a deep bite mark on his hand, consistent with the victim’s final defensive act.

Suwat quickly confessed, detailing his debt motive and confirming he had entered the room to commit robbery. The elaborate staging—the manipulation of the body, the stolen jewelry, and the intentional placement of misleading evidence—was exposed in detail during the subsequent criminal reenactment.

Justice Demanded

Suwat Kongsong was charged with multiple crimes, including homicide, robbery, and illegal entry.

The prosecution highlighted the extreme cruelty of the act and the calculated attempt to mislead the investigation. The victim’s father and younger sibling attended the hearings, demanding the maximum sentence for the perpetrator.

Suwat Kongsong faces the potential penalty of de@th or life imprisonment under Thai law, a definitive consequence for his actions that brutally shattered the safety and trust of the entire island community.
