I. THE STENCH IN MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL (The Case of Mark Kevin Bion)

On August 21, 2025, a heinous crime went viral on social media, shocking the nation not just for its brutality, but for the relationship between the victim and the perpetrator.

The story began with a foul, suffocating odor emanating from a house in Plaridel, Misamis Occidental. Residents initially dismissed it as a dead animal, but as days passed, the stench became unbearable, prompting them to call the Plaridel Municipal Police Station.

On August 20, at 2:00 PM, police arrived at the Northern Poblacion. Residents pointed to a specific house. The smell was so overpowering that officers had to wear multiple face masks before they could enter.

Underneath the house, amidst a pile of cluttered belongings, they found the source: the decomposing remains of a woman, wrapped in cellophane. The victim was identified as Warlita Bion (55), a former OFW who had worked in Kuwait to support her family.

The shock turned to horror when the investigation revealed the suspect: her own son, Mark Kevin Bion (15). Neighbors recalled hearing Warlita scream for help four times days earlier, but the cries had stopped abruptly, leading them to dismiss the incident.

When neighbors asked Mark about the smell, he lied, claiming it was just a dead cat. Suspicious, neighbors asked permission from Mark’s grandmother to inspect the house while Mark was away, leading to the grisly discovery of Warlita’s leg protruding from the clutter.

II. THE MOTIVE: A MEAL DENIED

Mark eventually surrendered to the police and confessed to the crime. The motive was chillingly petty: On the evening of August 15, 2025, Mark came home and asked his mother for food.

Warlita refused. Enraged, Mark punched his mother with all his strength. He then slammed her head against a hard object, causing her to lose consciousness and eventually pass away.

He wrapped his own mother in cellophane and hid her body under the house, returning upstairs to clean the crime scene. Neighbors revealed a strained relationship; Mark, who grew up with his grandmother while Warlita worked abroad, was described as undisciplined and resentful towards his mother.

Despite the confession, Mark faces no jail time. Under Republic Act 9344 (The Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006), a child 15 years of age or under is exempt from criminal liability. He was turned over to the DSWD for rehabilitation, sparking a renewed debate on whether the age of criminal responsibility should be lowered for heinous crimes.

III. THE STORAGE BOX IN BULACAN (The Case of Raymond Villa Tike)

Our second story transpired on March 11, 2023, in Bulacan. Residents discovered a storage box emitting a foul odor in a grassy area. Inside, police found the decomposing body of a woman, her head severely bashed, wrapped in plastic.

The victim was identified as Maria Elena “Baby” Estrella Villa Tike (67), a widow and canteen owner from Pasig City who had been missing since March 4. Her family was devastated. Elena was known as a kind, generous woman who lived with her youngest son, Raymond Villa Tike (28).

Suspicion fell on Raymond when the family’s helper noted he had unusually gone to the market to buy ingredients—something he never did—and bought the wrong items. When Elena’s siblings visited her house to check on her, Raymond lied, claiming she was at the mall or the doctor.

However, CCTV footage showed Elena never left the house. More damningly, Raymond’s ex-girlfriend revealed that their child, who visited Elena weekly, had witnessed Raymond hurting his grandmother.

IV. THE PRETENDER AND THE PARRICIDE

Police reviewed CCTV footage from March 6, which showed Raymond struggling to drag a heavy storage box out of the house. He was seen dragging the same box at a gas station before driving to Bulacan to dump it.

Inside the house, police found bloodstained pillows and blankets. Raymond fled but was arrested on March 12 after a relative spotted him at a mall.

Raymond confessed to the crime. He admitted he had been stealing money from his mother (she had recently lost Php 20,000) and that on the night of March 4, he demanded that she let him manage her canteen business.

Elena refused, telling him she didn’t trust him. Enraged by her refusal and her harsh words, Raymond bludgeoned her with a hard object until she was lifeless.

He wrapped her body in garbage bags and, chillingly, Christmas gift wrappers to conceal the contents before stuffing her into the box. He waited two days, researching the perfect disposal site, before dumping her in Bulacan.

Raymond, who posed to others as a pilot or CEO but was actually unemployed and dependent on his mother, was charged with Parricide. Unlike Mark, Raymond is of legal age and faces reclusion perpetua (life imprisonment) for the ultimate betrayal of the woman who raised him.
